Diplomas offer an exciting and challenging alternative to traditional qualifications by helping learners to develop work-relevant skills, knowledge and understanding in an exciting, creative and enjoyable way.

They provide first-hand experience and insight into the world of work with the opportunity to take part in a practical, real-world environment; and give learners the essential knowledge and personal skills that you will need for college, university or the world of skilled work.

Introduction to Diplomas

We’re really excited to be among the first in Norfolk to be able to offer you this new national qualification - we’re particularly excited because we realise that the Diploma could be the right choice for so many young people.

This year OpenOpportunity has 6 Diploma lines available:

Each is available at level 1, 2 and 3 which means that you will be able to come on a course that meets your interests, talents, needs and abilities.

If you are currently in Year 9 at school you may be able to come on one of these diplomas at Foundation or Higher level (levels are explained later).

Whether you’ve got a career in mind, hope to go to university or just want to see what’s out there, a Diploma is the perfect way to explore your options. It’s a new qualification for 14 to 19 year olds and offers a mix of classroom learning, creative thinking and hands-on experience – all designed for wherever you want to go in life.

For more information please call us on 01603 773635 or email to hnorton@openopportunity.org.

The Diploma

  • is a new way a learning

It is a qualification based around work rather than traditional subjects and you will have opportunities to experience different styles of learning in different environments, with an emphasis on practical activities

  • has been developed by employers

Employers have helped to develop the Diplomas because they want to have young people coming to them who have skills and qualities that they need: creativity, team work, problem solving, reflection, confidence and capability.  There’ll be lots of opportunities to work with employers throughout your time on the Diploma

  • is valued by universities

Many universities, such as UEA, Warwick, Manchester and Leeds, are backing Advanced Diplomas as having the potential to be excellent preparation for the most demanding university courses

  • will help you learn how to apply your knowledge of English, maths and ICT

You have already done or are just finishing your GCSEs and have knowledge of English, maths and ICT. Doing a Diploma means you will learn how to apply these subjects to further study and in a work environment. The skills will be related to work contexts, so that you can see how useful and important they are in these situations. This means you’ll be able to use them confidently in work and study situations, which is something that both employers and universities are keen to see.

  • will help you to develop personal, learning and thinking skills

You will learn how to think creatively and manage yourself, as well as develop your capacity to be an effective team member and leader, all of which skills are vital in both life and work. Again, opportunities to develop these skills will be provided in work-like contexts related to your chosen employment sectors, so that you can see how useful and important they are.

  • includes work experience

You will spend a minimum of 10 days in the workplace. Ideally this work experience will be directly related to the Diploma being studied and its focus will be on developing employability skills.

The Diploma in Hospitality

There are many sectors in the hospitality industry including hotels, restaurants, leisure, events, public houses, and contract food services.

Many new job opportunities are being created every day, and there is a shortage of skilled staff. At the end of August 2007, over 140 new hotels had opened in the UK in the space of 12 months, with almost £3bn invested in the industry during that period – more than in any previous year.

Communication and interpersonal skills, team working, problem solving, numeracy and knowledge of IT are all important if you want to work in this sector. A career in hospitality could open up the world for you. Many hospitality companies are international and offer opportunities to work abroad.

  • Course content

The Diploma in Hospitality will give you a taste of the huge range of opportunities, jobs and career paths offered by the industry. Because the sector is driven by customer service, a positive attitude will get you a long way. You may discover a passion for travel, enjoy exotic food, or even become a top chef or hotel and restaurant owner!

Much of the industry is made up of small businesses so the opportunities for entrepreneurship are vast. The Diploma reflects this by teaching you what you need to know to set up and run your own business.

The Diploma in Hospitality focuses on four main themes:
- The hospitality industry: This introduces you to the basics of the sector and shows you the impact that the hospitality industry has on the UK economy and the excitement of working within it.
- People in hospitality: The hospitality industry is a ‘people based’ industry. This theme looks at how important your people skills are, not only to the success of the business but in how you work with your colleagues.
- Hospitality operations: You will explore how food and beverages are prepared and served to customers, including food safety, foods from different cultures and the principles of healthy eating. You will also have a chance to develop some practical skills in cooking.
- Business and finance in hospitality (introduced across other topics at Foundation level): This theme covers important business and financial practices, and at Advanced level looks at budgeting, planning, financial control and marketing.

  • Course venue

You will be based at City College Norwich and CNS. You will also spend time at local employers. This way you can be sure to have expert teachers and the best facilities at every stage.
